Here is a transfer of a song from Stanley Kubrick’s Paths of Glory. The singer is Susanne Christian, who would go on to marry Stanley Kubrick shortly after the production ended. In this sequence, which is the final scene of the film, the squadron is ordered back to the front, but are obliviously celebrating and you can hear their captain, played Kirk Douglas accepting these orders. In 2006, in honor of the annual Kubrickopia Nicholas Gurewitch and I compiled an entire CD of music from the films of Stanley Kubrick, and one of these days we’ll make an effort to make it more available.

This movie was wonderful and the last scene you mentioned was the perfect ending. Great Kubrick.

What a great movie. I saw it many years ago (and movies) and the ending tune often played in my mind but I couldn’t remember what movie. The other evening Paths of Glory was shown on TCM. What a treat. And now, my son, visiting from California and much more computer literate than I, found your site and the song. Thank you.

Is there an english translation of the words?

The final scene is a masterpiece by Stanley.
A lovely young german maiden fearful of maybe her life and probably her virginity is forced to sing in front of an audience of hardened western front soldiers with little sympathy for the enemy. And then in a scene which restores your faith in humanity her halting song, her innocence and fears touch the heart of these brutalised men and reveal their empathy for her tragic situation and the senselessness of war which created it. I love his scene

there have been a lot of wonderful films releasd over the course of my life, but at my advanced age i honestly mean it when i say that this film stands with the best of them, and this final scene still has the power to choke me up.

the song is called the faithful hussar, an old German folksong from the 1700’s. It can be found with a little searching. Too bad the attached photo isn’t of the scared German girl singing. It’s not exactly anti-war, the soldiers are brave and blamless, since their country is being invaded. It’s anti-arrogence and the disregard for humanity.
